Red flags worth knowing
- Any fee to join. Registration, training, security or “refundable” deposits. A real employer pays you; you don’t pay them. Walk away.
- A bond or service agreement for an internship or entry-level job. Read the exact penalty before signing.
- “Unpaid” with big promises. Fine for a short, structured learning role. Not fine if the work is a full-time job in disguise.
- Pay that depends on targets (“performance-based stipend”, “incentive-based”). Ask what interns actually earned.
- No company name, website or named person, or contact only through WhatsApp or a free email address.
- “Immediate joining” and pressure to reply today.
Phrases and what they usually mean
- “Fast-paced environment”
- Priorities change often. Ask how big the team is.
- “Self-starter” / “minimal supervision”
- Not much hand-holding. Ask who you report to.
- “Wear many hats”
- Several jobs in one. Ask which one is actually yours.
- “Competitive stipend”
- The number isn’t written down. Ask for it early.
- “We’re like a family”
- Boundaries may be loose. Ask about normal working hours.
- “Other duties as assigned”
- Anything. Ask for two examples from the last intern.
- “Freshers can apply”
- Usually a good sign for students.
